Resumen

The objective of this work has been to set up the 4παβ liquid scintillation counting technique to the standardization of solutions of different radionuclides, mainly alpha-particle emitters, being a simple and quick technique compared to others usually used at the CIEMAT Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory (LMRI) for the standardization of these radionuclides. The 4παβ liquid scintillation counting technique has been used in combination with others currently used in LMRI, such as 2πα counting with grid ionization chamber, to obtain the information and reference values of the solutions activity concentration needed to apply and validate this technique. The results obtained by 4παβ liquid scintillation counting have been compared with those obtained using 2πα counting with grid ionization chamber. The simplest standardizations were performed over four 241Am solutions with a single alpha-emitting nuclide; two 243Am solutions also containing the beta-emitting descendant 239Np in radioactive equilibrium; and a 242Pu solution with impurities of other alpha- and beta-emitting plutonium isotopes but whose isotopic composition is known. In all cases, the results obtained by both techniques overlap in their respective uncertainty intervals, thus validating the standardization of these solutions by liquid scintillation counting...
