Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze character design, especially in fighting video games. This kind of video games has kept its users loyal for more than 30 years through the different narrative arcs of the franchises as well as with the design of the characters that star in the different sagas. We are, without a doubt, facing a good example of design; complex and resistant to time, since many characters have hardly changed their aesthetics slightly over the years and have become recognizable archetypes in the general culture. This research delves into the development of the different development companies, analyzing the different fighting video games launched on the market and their narrative arcs, in addition to the audiovisual products derived from feature films, animation, comics, soundtracks and art books, among others. In order to propose a prototype of the design method, 9 of the most famous fighting video games in recent history have been analyzed, establishing a series of aesthetic categories as well as some styles of play per character. This analysis has also been compared to user preferences and the professional work of various concept artists involved in character design for video games.
