Abstract

It is well established that caring for dependent elderly people has physical and emotional effects on caregivers, especially when the people receiving care suffer from a type of dementia (Pinquart & Sörensen, 2003; Vitaliano et al., 2003). Furthermore, there is empirical evidence which shows that many caregivers are not only able to successfully adapt to the caregiving situation, but also that they can come out of it stronger (Crespo & Fernández-Lansac, 2015). Given the interpersonal nature of caregiving, the relationship between the caregiver and the person receiving care could explain the differing impact of caregiving on children (Karantzas & Simpson 2015; Morse et al., 2012). One key theory for understanding the role of this parent-child relationship could be attachment theory, as it takes into account not only the role of human bonds, but also the role of emotions and emotional regulation (Mikulincer &Shaver, 2007; Simpson & Rholes, 1994). Furthermore, this theory could prove useful for understanding how and why certain family members come across so many issues in the role of caregiver (Simpson & Rholes, 2012)...
