Resumen

A triangular fortress for the new Marquis of Villena: Revising the chronology and style of the fifteenth-century castle of Belmonte Even though the fifteenth-century castle of Belmonte (Cuenca, Spain) is often mentioned in modern bibliography, many doubts still surround it. The dates of its construction are unknown and the origins of its triangular plan are far from clear. Through an in-depth analysis of various archival, historical, architectonic and visual sources, this study aims to present a hypothetical chronology for the building, while it also attempts to understand its peculiar triangular shape. Besides, this work will also propose that this fortress needs to be studied by taking into account the surrounding panorama and viewing it as the fundamental piece of a much larger architectonic programme that Juan Pacheco, the Marquis of Villena, designed to showcase his persona.
