Abstract

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal pain conditions in society, which supposes a huge socioeconomic cost.The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dry needling alone in comparison with sham needling, wet needling, and alternative physical treatments (with or without interventions), applied on trigger points associated with neck pain symptoms.Randomized controlled trials that included one group which received dry needling for myofascial trigger points were identified in electronic databases. The results included pain intensity, pressure pain thresholds, pain-associated disability, and cervical range of motion. To evaluate the risk of bias (RoB) and methodological quality of the trials, the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were used. The quality of the evidence was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, and the between-groups (MD) and standardized (SMD) mean differences were calculated.
