Abstract

The main steps that should be followed in the design and execution of an animal breeding program are: 1) the definition of the breeding objective in the context of a particular production system, 2) the election of the base population and, in its case, the crossing system, 3) the implementation of an evaluation and selection system, and 4) the dissemination of the genetic progress obtained in the selection nucleus to the commercial populations. Previously obtained results from artificial selection and inbreeding experiments in aquatic organisms are reviewed. Finally, several recently proposed methodologies for controlling inbreeding in selection programs are described.
