Abstract
This chapter includes descriptions of: 1) the «infinitesimal» model of quantitative genetics, as well as that of the basic estimation procedures of the parameters required (heritability and genetic correlation), with special reference to the economic traits usually considered in breeding programs in aquaculture; 2) the main consequences of the action of genetic drift on metric traits (inbreeding depression and erosion of the genetic variance) in relation to the magnitude of the effective size of the population considered; and 3) the prediction of the response to artificial selection in terms of the main factors involved (intensity, generation interval and precision of the selection procedure), followed by an analysis of the joint action of selection and drift on quantitative traits
