Resumen
It is generally accepted that the lamellar bodies are theintracellular storage sites of pulmonary surfactant. Lamellar bodies are characterized by a high phospholipid/proteinratio, their lipid composition being very similar to the corresponding patterns of extracellular surfactant (Possmayer,1984). Very recently, we showed that the molecular speciescomposition of phosphatidylcholine (PC) from lamellarbodies and surfactant is very similar and that lamellar bodiescontain more dipalmitoyl-PC and less 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylPC than other type I1 pneumocyte membranes (Schlame etal., 1988). Concerning surfactant proteins, recent studieshave showed that the surfactant apoprotein SF'26-36 isassociated with the phospholipid lamellae and the peripheryof the lamellar body (Walker et al., 1986). However, immunocytochemical localization of SP5-18 proteins to type I1 cellsor other lung cells has not been reported.
