Abstract

Almenara-Nules and Benicasim marshes are located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The sedimentary record of the Holocene coastal deposits of the Almenara-Nules and Benicasim basins has been separated into 6 transgres- sive-regressive sequences (T-R). Parasequences have been grouped into two sedimentary system tracts. The lower, in which coastal deposits appear, corresponds to a transgressive system tract (TST) and the upper one, in which lake sedimentation dominates, to a high sea level system tract (HST). Both system tracts are limited by a maximum flood surface dating to ca. 7,000 cal. BP. Glacio-eustatic variations controlled sedimentation up to 7 ka and there after they dominated the common local factors of the western Mediterranean, especially surface sea currents governed primarily by climate.
