Abstract

This work presents the results after modifying the da- tabase laboratory session of the Introduction Computer Science subject of the Bachelor’s Degree in Video Ga- me Design and Development in order to introduce the flipped classroom methodology in combination with the use of a pedagogical videogame. There exist se- veral studies that show the benefits of both, the use of flipped classroom methodology and the use of video- games in teaching. On this basis, we applied a combi- nation of both strategies in database teaching for first year students, aiming at increasing their motivation and favoring an active learning. The results of the analy- sis, carried out after collecting the students’ opinion and their marks on a test (during the lecture sessions), show that students that attended the laboratory session perform better. Moreover, students have possitive opi- nions about the new methodology, stating that they feel more confident and better prepared to face the labora- tory session.
