Abstract

This article analyses the origin and evolution of the Partido Socialista Popular (Socialist Popular Party - and the Partido Socialista del Interior, Socialist Party of the Interior, that preceded it – with a particular focus on its role during the spanish democratic transition and its merger with the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, PSOE). The article will also examine the context and causes of fragmentation among socialist groups during the Franco dictatorship in the 1960s and 70s as well as the process leading to their fusion. In addition, the article will seek to identify the main elements behind Enrique Tierno Galván’s thinking during his leadership years.
