Abstract

HTLV-1 was the first retrovirus considered responsible of a human cancer: Adult T Cell Leukemia-Lymphoma (ATLL). It also causes Tropical Spastic Paraparesis/HTLV Associated Myelopathy(TSP/HAM), a progressive neurological disorder. Besides, infected patients tend to have more severe forms of infectious diseases such as strong yloidiasis and tuberculosis. Endemic HTLV-1 regions include Japan, sub-Saharan Africa, South America, the Caribbean area, Australo-Melanesia and some Middle East spots. Approximately 5–10 million people are known to be infected with HTLV-1worldwide, although this number may be much higher due to lack of epidemiological studies in some areas.In order to synthesize the vast information on HTLV-1 and ATLL in Latin America and at the sametime, develop preventive strategies adapted to the socioeconomic peculiarities of the region, an integrative review was performed, based on a systematic bibliographic search according to the PRISMA scheme.
