Abstract

To prevent the transmission of HIV, several preventive measures have been used: consistent condom use, sex education, HIV/STI screening, post-exposure prophylaxis, early HIV diagnosis, immediate antiretroviral treatment and, more recently, pre-exposure prophylaxis. (PrEP). The latter consists of the administration of antiretroviral drugs to seronegative people with high-risk practices to prevent the contraction of HIV. Since its implementation, an increase in risky sexual practices has been described, facilitated by the use of PrEP, called “risk compensation”.This article-based thesis has three main objectives: [1] to describe the sociodemographic, clinical and behavioral characteristics of men who have sex with men (MSM) with a new diagnosis of HIV infection and to study their progress between 2014-2019; [2] to estimate the preventive effect that PrEP could have had in patients with documented HIV seroconversion between 2014-2016 in a HIV/STI clinic, and [3] to measure the clinical and behavioral changes associated with PrEP, “risk compensation”, through the analysis of condom use in anal intercourse, number of sexual partners, use of recreational drugs for sex and frequency of STIs.
