Abstract
The discovery of lithic and faunal remains in a small karstic rock shelter located in the outskirts of Segovia city in April 2012 marked the beginning of archaeological investigations that have revealed the presence of various karstic sites in the Eresma River valley. The chronology of these sites places the presence of Neanderthals in this area of inland Iberia between 44.000 and 41.000 cal BP. This represents the most recent evidence of the Neanderthal presence in the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. This chronology is later than the latest currently accepted datings for the end of the Mousterian in Northern Iberia (Higham et al., 2012). Excavation campaigns have been uninterruptedly conducted in the Mousterian sites mentioned in the text since 2013, except in 2020 due to the health crisis generated by COVID-19.
