Abstract
This paper deals with the resistance offered by the Provincial and many friars,some of them very prominent, of the Franciscan Province of the Holy Gospel of New Spain,against the Commissioner General, Friar Alonso Ponce because he sought to put into effectthe rulings of the most recent Chapter General about the profession of young criollos (of mixedrace but high social status). The Provincial Friar Pedro de San Sebastián and his supporters won theunconditional support of the Viceroy, the Marquess of Villamanrique, who accused Ponce of causingsocial unrest in the viceroyalty and exiled him to Spain, his place being taken by Friar Bernardino deSan Cipriano.
