Resumo

Infinitival verbal periphrases may feature an Intermediate Element between the auxiliary verb and the auxiliated verb, whose categorial status as well as its semantic contribution to the structure's meaning are arguable. In this paper we will address the question of whether we are dealing with a natural class for purposes of syntactic rules and rules of' semantic interpretation; that is, if there is a 'grammar' of lntermediate Elements. A fundamental issue that we will deal with here, and which has been mostly overlooked in the literature, is whether they indeed need to be assigned to a category; in other words, whether lntermediate Elements are categorematic or syncategorematic.
