Abstract

The aim of this work is to show how Enlightenment thought tried to improvereligious orders behavior. During sixteenth and seventeenth centuries religious orders hadexpanded all over around the Spanish Geography and their behavior was not as exemplary asthey should be. If we analyse the situation in detail, we can notice how both, friars and nounsdid not observe their rules. Specifically, if we talk about their poverty vow. Most of religiousorders lived, during the Baroque century, as if they were pertaining to aristocracy. While poorwere nearly starving. Most of them were owners of a large number of lands and meadows.Even in big cities they had also an important number of houses to rent.
