Abstract

Seismicity is often used to deduce tectonic features of a region. The study of earthquakes as a tectonic component, seismo- tectonics, has grown over the last decades becoming a fundamental tool for the understanding of geodynamics, especially from the analysis of focal mechanisms. Since the 1970s, focal mechanisms are systematically calculated, populating global databases. The increase of available data improves our knowledge of tectonic processes, but makes their analysis more complex. When representing populations of focal mechanisms, diagrams have been proposed to facilitate their analysis (e.g. Frohlich and Apperson, 1992; Kaverina et al., 1996). To improve our capacity to analyze focal mechanisms, we can imple- ment clustering algorithms that allow us to handle a larger number of data statistically. In this work I present examples of the use of hierarchical clustering algorithms (implemented in FMC software, Álvarez-Gómez, 2019) in various seismic series and tectonic contexts.
