Zusammenfassung

During the last decades, the use of the X-ray computerized tomography (CT or CAT) in earth sciences has resulted in a signi- ficant contribution to the 3D and 4D study of different geological aspects (e.g., Mees et al., 2003). This non-destructive tech- nique allows the internal structure of decimetre-sized samples to be visualized and analysed with a submillimetre resolution. In this work, we present the first data obtained through CT scans on block and borehole core samples collected in the shear zone of the Alhama de Muria fault, one of the active faults with the highest seismic potential in the Iberian Peninsula. The aim of this work is to obtain 3D deformation ellipsoids through the systematic and automatized analysis of the data obtained from the analysed samples. In addition, this analysis is performed on samples collected at different points through the fault, allowing the analysis of the possible variation of the deformation distribution within the fault zone. The ultimate purpose of this study is to shed light on what are the mechanisms of earthquake generation by analysing the distribution of the deforma- tion within the shear zone on an active fault.
