Abstract

Spain's population is rapidly aging. Therefore, it is important for physicians and healthcare professionals to be trained in order to attend to their needs. Aging is not a disease. Nevertheless, older people require special attention due to their frailty and significant comorbidity. In the evaluation of elderly individuals, knowing their social situation, life events, and mental condition is of great importance. Depression is the most prevalent disease in elderly patients. The symptoms of depression may be less intense and fluctuate, generate a high degree of disability, and are not very different from those of an adult patient. Treatment can be provided with antidepressants at sufficient doses and with psychotherapy.
