Abstract

Nonsuicidal self-injury, frequently called self-harm, is the act of deliberately harming the body without the intention of dying. Though nonsuicidal self-injury can occur in any part of the body, the most common locations are the arms, hands, wrists, and thighs. The clinical evaluation must include a physical and psychopathological examination in which special emphasis is placed on suicidal thoughts. Likewise, the clinical interview should explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that precede self-injury, the circumstances that lead to nonsuicidal self-injury, and the consequences of the behavior. Treatment includes creating a safety plan; a psychotherapeutic intervention focused on identifying and approaching cognitive, behavioral, and emotional factors that lead to and maintain nonsuicidal self-injury; and specific behavioral functions and drug therapy, if needed.
