Abstract

The approach to the translation into Spanish of the araboislamic codes of personal status has varied over time, in the same way that the purpose to which the translations were intended has varied. While the first translations, either of the complete codes or only of some of their contents, were made mostly by Arabists having as target specialized readers and experts in the subject, later they were made by jurists and oriented towards that audience to, in the last place, see the light studies of some codes from the field of legal translation and translation studies. Compared to other fields of law in which the differences are minor, personal status codes are texts that are characterized by their anchoring in Islamic law, which dilutes the textual differences between the codes of one country and another. Another of its characteristics, which emerges from its majority inspiration in Islamic law, is the fossilization of the language used, at the same time that there are terms linked to positive law and that, therefore, involve the use of modern Arabic at a level of formal language.
