Arqueología del paisaje en la bahía de Algeciras

Abstract

This paper shows a particular application of Landscape Archaeology to the Bay of Algeciras which is part of our doctoral thesis. This work is developed in the framework of some archaeological research projects concerning Carteia and leaded by Prof. Roldán of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Taking the town of Carteia as the main urban centre in the area we seek to depict not only the ancient environment but also other social and symbolic spatial constructions. Thus the changes in Carteia landscape during more than one thousand years will be studied in order to reach an integral understanding of the subject. Given that the environment has been so modified in the last centuries we have, in this work, to gather all kind of sources: documentary sources –historical texts and cartography- apart from traditional archaeological sources such as archaeological digs as well as analytical data.
