Factores sociodemográficos relacionados con la inteligencia emocional en los profesionales de Enfermería

Zusammenfassung

Objectives: to analyze the differences in terms of Emotional Intelligence (EI) according to gender, age, hospital unit, number of years of experience, number of patients managed, and type of contract; and to determine the relationships between EI dimensions and total EI. Method: a correlational transversal study. The population was formed by all Nursing Professionals in the Hospital Universitario de Fuenlabrada (Madrid). In order to conduct fieldwork, each participant was given a booklet including the Schutte Self Report Inventory (SSRI) (16) Questionnaire, which assesses both intrapersonal and interpersonal aspects of EI. The booklet also collected information about the six sociodemographic variables assessed in the study. Results: the study included 133 Nursing Professionals (32 men and 101 women); 61 of them from Special Units, and 72 from Hospitalization. From all sociodemographic variables studied, only differences based on gender were found in the three dimensions of EI and total EI: women presented higher EI levels than men. The correlational analysis showed that the three EI dimensions are positively associated with one another and, at the same time, with total EI. Conclusions: gender has an impact on the EI levels of Nursing professionals: women value, express, adjust and use their emotions better. EI represents an essential professional competence for Nurses, which must be developed in order to improve Nursing Clinical Practice.
