Abstract

Upper maxillary quick expansion is an orthopedic-orthodontic procedure to separate palatal midline suture. Traditionally it has been done with a four teeth supported device. The aim of this paper is to present a two-band design to achieve disjunction and to compare the outcomes with Biederman's Higienic Disjunctor. The sample consisted in 19 children between 8 and 15 years of age treated at Universidad Complutense of Madrid Orthodontic Clinic with either the two band disjunctor or the Biederman one (four bands). Cephalometry and study model were done before treatment and just after the expansion. Statistic analysis showed therefore that the two band disjunctor was as efective as the other and it has the advantage of easier mouth setting and less discementation risk.
