In aquaculture, pre-slaughter handling includes fasting to ensure emptying of the digestive system and crowding and capturing fish from tanks or cages before slaughter. To analyse the effect of both of these potential stressors, 144 rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) were fasted for 7 days (158.2 °C days) and crowded in their raceways for 20 min, and later compared to controls (neither fasted nor crowded). The stomach content, coefficient of condition, liver somatic index, plasma cortisol, lactate and triglycerides were lower in fasted trout. Conversely, crowding stress increased plasma cortisol, lactate and glucose, suggesting a decrease in their welfare level. Fasting up to 150 °C days did not seem to have a negative effect on stress but crowding was stressful and its effect on stress but crowding was stressful and its effects were independent of fasting status.
