Abstract

Twenty seven Merino lambs (16,3±0,28 kg) were used to study theeffects of the addition of 4% hydrogenated palm oil or 4% sunflower oil to theconcentrate for fattening lambs on carcass characteristics. Animals weredivided into three experimental groups (Control, Palma and Girasol) and received the concentrate feed and barley straw ad libitum. Lambs wereslaughtered when they reached 25 kg. Neither hydrogenated palm oil norsunflower oil inclusion caused significant changes (P>0,05) on carcass weight, chilling losses, fat colour or consistency, meat colour and shoulder tissuecomposition. Therefore, the inclusion of 4% hydrogenated palm oil or sunfloweroil in diets for fattening lambs is not detrimental for carcass characteristics ormeat and fat colour.
