Resum

The collection of Medieval Textiles of the Abbey of Santa María la Real de las Huelgas (Burgos), guarded by Patrimonio Nacional (Spanish National Heritage), consists of 220 pieces belonging to the 13th and 14th centuries, which is unique in their kind. They come from the mausoleum of Castilian royalty, housed by the Abbey. Its scientific opening was carried out between 1942 and 1944. While the bibliography mentioning these textiles is relatively extensive, admittedly, an overall study has not been carried out again since 1946. The vicissitudes of the collection from its discovery to the present day make it necessary to place these pieces in their historical context by means of an in-depth study. Given the relevance of Alfonso VIII and Leonor Plantagenet, the royal founders of the Abbey of Las Huelgas, and both deceased in1214, a work on the 13th-century Castile’s textile culture is undertaken through the monographic analysis of their grave goods.
