Abstract

Objectives: To know the sizes of the feet in a population consisting in schoolchildren aged between 6 and 12 years, to develop a nomogram of foot growth. Methods: Cross-sectional retrospective descriptive observational study. Ink footprints made during podiatric examinations for schoolchildren from 1996 to 2015 in the Podiatric School Health Program (PSEP) were analized. This material was located in the Clinical Podiatric Area of the University of Seville. In order to achieve the stated objectives, the measures analyzed were foot length, forefoot width and heel width from the perimeter of the foot recorded in the footprints of the participants. Results: The sample consisted of 1438 boys and 1486 girls aged between 6 and 12 years (5848 feet). Among the main results, we have found that age is directly related to both foot length and forefoot and heel width, as well as multiple relationships between each other must be taken into account. Boys showed larger foot dimensions than girls at same age. However, we found no clinically significant differences between right and left foot for the total sample. Conclusions: We can conclude that the biological rhythm of foot growth is of interest for our profession and for other disciplines, since the development of children's feet is progressive and is closely related to age, while there is a strong relationship between the different variables that we must take into account in different areas. This study justifies the continuation of this research in different places of Spain, thus providing useful results both for the knowledge body of Podiatry and for a multidisciplinary level, through the elaboration of a national nomogram of foot growth.
