Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the diagnosis of the patients receiving monotherapy with an ocular hypotensive drug in our health area. Methods: Ninety six patients were recruited. Their treatment was interrupted and they were followed for 1 year with various tests that included visual field exploration and optic disk topography. The patients whose intraocular pressures were > 23 mm of Hg or that were diagnosed of having glaucoma were re-treated with timolol, latanoprost or brimonidine. Seventy patients completed the study and received a clinical diagnosis and a second diagnosis by the Moorfields regression analysis classification. Results: Only 31 patients (44.3%) needed re-treatment. Of the 39 patients (55.7%) that did not require re-treatment, 7 (10%) received a diagnosis of glaucoma suspicion and 32 patients (45.7%) were considered normal. Conclusion: Around 50% of the patients receiving monotherapy with an ocular hypotensive drug in our health area do not need the treatment.
