Resum

The effect of the feeding system (pasture or drylot) and sex on the productive characteristicsof lambs raised in an ecological production system has been studied. For that purpose, 84weaned lambs were divided into 4 homogeneous batches, two of which consisting of males andthe other two were females reared on pasture or fold. The evolution of the fatty acid compositionin the pasture plots from April to June was also studied. An increase in the levels of SFA andMUFA was observed at the approach of June, when those fatty acids reached the maximum level. However, PUFA reached the highest level in April whereas the lowest was observed in June, mainly due to the decrease in 18:3.There was a significant interaction between the studied factors on lamb growth, since highervalues were observed in males raised on pasture than those on drylot and in females raisedon drylot in comparison with those raised on pasture. Neither the carcass weight nor the chillinglosses were affected by the rearing system. However, sex affected the carcass yield, showingfemales higher values. The feed intake was higher in males fed by pasture in comparison withthose fed by drylot.
