Benedicere vs. maledicere. La exégesis patrística de IOB 1,5 y 2,9*

Resumen

El presente trabajo aborda la exégesis patrística latina del verbo hebreo ברך) bārak) en los versículos 1,5 y 2,9 del libro veterotestamentario de Job. Aunque el significado principal de bārak es “bendecir”, este verbo a menudo se interpreta como un eufemismo empleado en el lugar de su antónimo, “maldecir”, que — de acuer-do con la mayor parte de los estudiosos— debía evitarse cuando el objeto de la acción era Dios. Tras ofrecer una panorámica global del fenómeno, se examina la interpretación que de él ofrecieron algunos autores tardoantiguos de la Iglesia de Occidente, a saber: el autor del Anonymi in Iob commentarius, Agustín de Hipona y Gregorio Magno. La recepción del libro de Job en estos autores constituye, de un lado, un eslabón fundamental para enlazar la primera exégesis del texto con las interpretaciones modernas y, de otro, la única tradición conservada de algunas traducciones de la Biblia.
