Abstract

In the plastics industry, plasticizers are quite an important additive family. Plasticizers are essential in many cases for the correct processing of some types of polymers. The ductile properties improvement of a polymer when a plasticizer is added is a direct consequence of the interaction between the molecules of both, where reactivity is a key factor. In this sense, modified/functionalized vegetable oils represent an attractive option, mainly when eco-sustainability and biocompatibility are major requirements for the material. There are several possible routes for the functionalization of vegetable oils, at the industrial level epoxidation and maleinization stand out. In this work, is made a brief review of the use of these two types of plasticizers, epoxidized vegetable oils (EVOs) and maleinized vegetable oils (MVOs), which are receiving increasing interest, mainly due to the rise of biomaterials
