Resumen

En el siguiente artículo analizaremos las representaciones de animales y criaturas en los reversos de la numismática proveniente de las cecas centrales del emperador Publio Licinio Galieno (253-268). A través de un estudio cuantitativo, examinaremos los 95 tipos distintos de animales y criaturas presentes en la numismática central del emperador y acuñados en sus 15 años de reinado. Así, discutiremos, en primer lugar, la importancia prestada por la historiografía moderna a las denominadas “series animales”, insertándolas en el contexto histórico de los años 267 y 268. En segundo lugar, en cambio, averiguaremos cuáles son las bestias más representadas en los reversos de los diferentes numerales e intentaremos explicar las motivaciones que hay detrás de cada representación, contextualizando cada animal o criatura dentro de la autorrepresentación pública de uno de los emperadores más importantes y longevos del siglo III.
