El concepto de democracia ocupa un lugar central en nuestros sistemas políticos y los ciudadanos son constantemente preguntados en encuestas por su opinión acerca de la democracia y por otros aspectos relacionados con la misma. Sin embargo, estas preguntas habitualmente omiten que el concepto de democracia es complejo y solo en contadas ocasiones se encuentran preguntas acerca de cómo entienden la democracia los entrevistados. Este estudio, combinando aprendizajes de la teoría política y la metodología de encuestas, analiza las preguntas de siete encuestas que hasta ahora se han realizado en España y que se aproximan de forma directa a estas concepciones. Para concluir, se ofrecen algunas reflexiones sobre las virtudes y defectos de las preguntas hasta ahora realizadas y se plantean unas recomendaciones generales para el futuro.
