Abstract

The aim of this paper is to offer an exhaustive grammatical description for a set of constituents formed by a verb and a subcategorized Prepositional Phrases headed by the preposition con “with” (e.g. discutir con (“to argue”)). Specifically, our proposal focuses on studying and describing in a more precise way the various PPs (con) that appear with verbs, according to whether they can be considered Arguments or Predicates and, more exceptionally, Adjuncts. For this purpose, we use a descriptive methodology that allows us to incorporate formal theoretical tools to the analysis of these constructions, more especially the possibility of configuring reduced clauses from the Prepositional Phrase (con/sin (“with/without”)) contrast. The results of this description and its corresponding analysis are reflected in a classification of expressions headed by the preposition con that takes as a characterizing base the lexical-syntactic particularities of the verbal nuclei to which they are associated. In this sense, we wanted to distinguish the syntactic status of the different Prepositional Phrases (con) based on their subcategorized or non-selected nature, a distinction that will focus on those that constitute a governed argument or express “state/situation”. Thus, verbs that select alternate regimen (from PPs (con) and DC/IC) and others that alternate prepositional phrases headed by a/con will also form part of this classificatory paradigm. Finally, uses that present verbal and adjective alternation have been included, which allows establishing interesting contrasts in relation to the argumentative selection exercised by verbs and adjectives such as simpatizar/simpático (“sympathise/sympathetic”) on Prepositional Phrases (con). In the same way, terminative verbs and non-subcategorizing prepositional verbs offer opposite grammatical associations regarding the occurrence of phrases headed by con. In short, with this study we intend to offer a lexical-syntactic classification of verbs that are combined with Prepositional Phrases (con) that takes into account not only the conceptual meaning of the verb, but also its Argument Structure, its syntactic behaviour and the lexical-syntactic status of the PP, as well as the possible prepositional alternations.
