Abstract

The objetive of the study is to know the prevalence of dental enamel dejects (DDE) in the first permanent molars in a infant population in Móstoles (Spain). Population and Methods: A cross sectional observational study has been carried out on 1. 090 eight year old school children in Móstoles (a nonfluoridated area). We define as case that child who presents DDE in one or more first permanent molars, acording to the criteria of the F.D.I. (lndex DDE). We then measure the caries prevalence and the DMFT index and its confidence limits at 95%. We used the programs SPSS V.6.0 and EPINFO V. 6.04 to carry out all the statistic calculations of the study. Results: the prevalence of DDE in the first permanent molars in the population of the study (n=l.054) is 5.69% (C.f. 95%: 7.08-4.98), and the DMFT index is 0.2. The index DMFT in schoolchidren without DDE is 0.16 and in schoolchildren whit DDE is o. 8 1, and then difference is statistically significant. In conclusion, DDE are a risk factor for tooth decay and they are more frequent in girls.
