Abstract

Following the guidelines of the Council of Europe, the current pedagogy of foreign languages focuses on the learning of linguistic and social skill that allows any given student to correctly get along the social context of his/her target language, thus being competent as both a language speaker and a social agent. However, it is not uncommon to find cases in which cultural differences generate some sort of friction or even conflicts between cultures. In this communication we propose a new methodological approach that uses popular songs as a tool for the students to develop the intercultural competence. The procedure consists of creating a situation in which friction between cultures occur and needs to be solved in a fictional context, therefore giving the students the tools to solve those circumstances in real life through intercultural negotiation and preparing them as a competent social agent in the target culture.
