Abstract

Biodegradable polymers are increasingly positioned in the packaging sector, representing an alternative to traditional non-degradable polymers frequently used in this field. Polyesters are particularly interesting since they are processed with the same technology used for traditional plastics. In particular, polyesters such as poly(butylene adipate-co- tereftalate) (PBAT), have gained interest in the biodegradable packaging industry because they exhibis similar properties to traditional petroleum-based plastics and better properties than biopolymers as well as they can biodegrade under composting conditions. This article discusses the main characteristics and applications of PBAT for the sustainable packaging field
