Abstract
This article explores the impact that the media in general and the radio in particular had on the evolution of Spanish academic music during the first Franco regime and its influence on the maintenance of a musical status quo. Despite its possibilities to renew the music scene, the media of that time remained close to a traditional and commercial aesthetic, offering entertainment to the public, in order to escape from the reality of a Spain in ruins. This reinforced both a style and a well-known repertoire, which did not offer significant news. In Spain, the new generations of composers had restricted access to the styles that were beginning to be heard in other countries. Consequently, Spanish music lacked references that would allow overcome cliches of the picturesque impressionism of Turina and the Falla's Three-Cornered Hat. The objective of this article is to explore how the media were part of this spiral of conservatism that would postpone until the late fifties the emergence of new vanguards in the rest of Europe.
