Resumo

The globalised and multicultural world in which we live reveals the urgent need for an interculturalisation of society and more specifically of education. In foreign language teaching, we face two important challenges. On the one hand, theoretical advances are not always incorporated into teaching practice and, on the other hand, research on intercultural communication usually focuses on face-to-face contexts, leaving aside the particularities of online teaching. The analysis of the data obtained during my doctoral thesis up to this moment reveals the existence of different challenges (such as the survival of the native speaker model or the lack of teacher training in intercultural communication, to name a few) when it comes to include this competence in practice. In response to these challenges, we present several suggestions, which can also be applied in online teaching, to promote interculturality, such as the use of ethnographic methods, tele-collaboration or the use of photo-elicitation.
