Abstract

The hipster character has focused the discussions on the new youth styles in the past decade. In this paper, we try to identify the central arguments of the discussion and trace their genealogy. We also analyze how the dynamics of cultural journalism affect the discussion. We will argue that the practices of the cultural field and cultural media block the emergence of real controversies as long as the discussion is limited to aesthetic questions which do not allow to configure culture as a public problem with access to the central public sphere.
