Abstract

The use of animations in interface design has experienced a significant increase inrecent years. Animation, criticised by usability experts in the past, has become afundamental element in shaping the visual design of mobile applications. In 1990,Baecker and Small collected the emerging uses of animation present in the firstgraphical user interfaces, configuring what is considered to be the first generaltaxonomy of animation at the interface. In this article we review the methodologyfollowed by the pioneers and analyse the perspective adopted by other authors whodeveloped later taxonomies. The aim is to establish the method for approaching thedevelopment of a taxonomy that captures the roles that animation can play in improvingusability and user experience on touchscreen smartphones. The analysis highlights theimportance of establishing a method to help make decisions on the level of granularityand nomenclature of the categories, as well as the convenience of defining a validationprocess to support the proposal
