Zusammenfassung

The selection of geological elements as natural heritage to be preserved must follow logical evaluation criteria that justify the differential treatment. In the first phase of preliminary selection, expert criteria are usually considered, and in the second phase a quantitative assessment is carried out that allows to apply a cut-off value and determine whether to include the element in the inventory or not. There is a methodological bias in this process regarding the consideration of recently discovered geological elements of high scientific interest and for which no studies or publications are yet available. In this paper, we analyse three of these cases recently considered in the Spanish Inventory of Geological Sites of Interest (IELIG). We conclude that, when there is still no published scientific information, the parameters of representativeness and rareness (singularity/uniqueness) of the geological element must have priority towards the quantification of scientific interest. In this case, it is important that the comparison scale used in the estimation of the parameters is strictly the scale of the study that is being conducted, which in the case of the analysed examples is at the national level.
