This thesis combines two lines of research: the construction of the liberal state in Spain and the role that fine arts played in this historical process. It represents a political-cultural approximation to the creation of the state, divided into three thematic areas, namely: Las colecciones del Estado (“The State Collections”), La sala de los paisajes (“The Landscape Gallery”) and La galería de los retratos (“The Portrait Gallery”). These museographic sections serve to analyse the different representations, social imaginary and symbols that nurtured the model of the Spanish state. To this end, this study combines methodologies from the Sociology of Art, Art History and Cultural History fields, allowing the research to focus on various cultural works from the Isabelline period in Spain: paintings, lithographs, photos, travel guides, picture cards and caricatures.
