Abstract

At the beginning of 1531 the Franciscan Fray Antonio de Aranda was chosen in Palestine to return early from the Custody of the Holy Land and bring to Charles V some letters sent by the Shah of Persia. This embassy is little known and has not been taken into account in the analysis of relations between the Emperor and the Persia of the Safavids, in the years following the expansion and settlement of the Portuguese on the shores of the Indian Ocean. The conservation of an important collection of letters exchanged between both leaders in previous years will allow us to describe in sufficient detail the degree of mutual knowledge and analyze the evolution of these relations, which constitute a rather neglected chapter of the Emperor's diplomacy. Although these contacts did not bear the expected results, they clearly demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of an alliance between distant empires to counteract the offensive of the Ottoman Empireat a critical moment in the history of Europe.
