Resumen

Aquaculture is a high-growth activity but at European level it has lost competitiveness and needs to move towards higher yield and sustainability values. One of the main issues to achieve it, is the replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in feed with vegetable proteins and oils from microalgae, conferring beneficial nutraceutical compounds to improve growth performance and welfare. The aim of this study was to evaluate aquafeeds supplemented with nutraceutical compounds extracted from microalgae. For this purpose, sea bream (Sparus aurata) (12-13 g) was fed for 12 weeks with 5 different treatments: i) a control feed, ii) a feed with the LB-GUThealth® additive (0.5 and 1%), and iii) a feed with the LB-GREENboost® additive (0.5 and 1%). The results showed that these compounds did not affect final body mass, although they improved feed conversion rates. Both compounds produced lower plasma lactate and cortisol levels, accompanied by a redistribution of triglyceride and glycogen levels. They also induced an elongation of the gastrointestinal tract, increasing the absorption surface and making it more selective and permeable. In conclusion, it has been shown that supplementation with both compounds in sea bream diets is suitable to improve feed efficiency, decreasing production costs, and exerting positive effects both at metabolic level and animal welfare, as well as on intestinal functionality, thus conferring an added value with potential to increase the competitiveness of the sector.
