Abstract

Skin and soft tissue infections are very frequent in all hospital departments. Given the wide variety of clinical manifestations, causal microorganisms, and severity, they can represent both a diagnostic and treatment challenge. The first step is to diagnose the type of infection, which is normally associated with one of two specific microorganisms, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Then, the patient's comorbidity and systemic involvement must be evaluated in order to propose treatment that is either more or less conservative. Mild infections tend to be treated solely with topical treatment whereas more severe infections may require broad-spectrum combined treatments and surgical control of the source, which on occasion can be aggressive. It may sometimes be necessary to provide coverage for resistant microorganisms, the most important of which is methicillin-resistant S. aureus.
