Resumo

The aim of this paper is to deepen our knowledge of the Franciscan devotion of the Trastámara Dynasty by demonstrating that one of the reliefs in the convent of San Juan de los Reyes represents a Crucifix accompanied by the portraits of Henry III of Castile, Catherine of Lancaster, and the Archbishop of Toledo, Pedro Tenorio. The alabaster relief, which also features a figure representing St Francis, was carved towards the end of the fourteenth century and was probably relocated above the sacristy’s main door by Isabel the Catholic as an allegory of the Franciscan piety of her family in a funerary context. Thanks to the discovery of this relief, an essential piece for the study of the Trastámaras’ religiosity is recovered, especially because this alabaster represents one of the very few devotional depictions of Henry III known to date.
