Abstract
The paper begins with a biographical and bibliographical sketch of Ayn Rand (1905-1982). Th e focus of the paper is on a narrative work entitled Anthem (1938) which refers to rational egoism, or, in other words, «the virtue of selfi shness». Confrontation between an individual hero and capitalist and collectivist villains, in a markedly individualistic key, flows into a triple allusion to the path of excess, paradox and, finally, dissidence.
